Avocado, the exotic treasure
Suggestions for proper nutrition during cultivation
By the AgriSC scientific team
Where does avocado come from, and where is it grown?
Avocado trees are evergreens that are native to Mexico. In recent years, they have also been successfully growing in the Mediterranean basin, particularly in Greece.
Its cultivation in Greece has increased over the last 25-30 years with more varieties and cultivation.
The tree is mainly grown in Crete, specifically in the prefectures of Chania and Rethymnon.
What are the most common varieties of avocados?
Depending on pollination, avocado varieties are divided into types A and B.
Hass, Lam Hass, and Reed are the most common type A varieties.
On the other hand, the most common type B varieties are Fuerte, Bacon, and Zutano.
Which are the early and late varieties of avocado cultivation?
The classification of early to late varieties starts with Zutano, Bacon, Fuerte, Hass, Lam Hass, and Reed. This ensures partial production and income from October to August.
How are pollination and fertilization conducted in avocados?
Type A and B plants must coexist in various proportions to achieve high pollination rates. This is because one type pollinates the other.
What type of soil does the avocado grow in?
Avocado plants prefer light soil with a small amount of clay or a high concentration of sand. They also thrive in fields with a good slope and ample organic matter.
Studies have shown avocado cultivation is most successful near rivers, particularly in fields with low pH and good drainage. However, there are now varieties that can withstand high-pH conditions.
The root system is a creeping root system that is swallowed and widespread (less than 1m depth).
It is also sensitive to chlorine and salt, requiring careful irrigation.
What are the standard planting methods?
Dense planting has been the preferred method in recent years. However, sparse planting is also possible depending on the varieties and the cultivation objective.
